0.2 About the Data Stewardship course
The skills of managing research data in accordance with good practices are transferable to skills in data management outside academia, but this requires some attention to determine the formats and the standards for the target field. In many areas of the non-academic sphere data management is as vital as in academia, and competencies and skills in this field are basic requirements. Moreover, PhD graduates who have developed these skills are in high demand in Data management positions in many companies and more specifically in the numerous companies specifically dedicated to data science services.
Data Stewardship is one of the three pilot courses developed during the DocEnhance project period, and you are now in Module 1. On completion of this online course, you should be able to:
- Articulate the background and rationale for good research data management.
- Describe basic terminology for research data management.
- Apply theoretical knowledge on the research data management life cycle to concrete projects.
- Discuss the purpose and advantages of transparency and open science with peers, the larger scholarly community, and non-academic collaborators.
The online course may equally well function as a training and learning resource, and you are also welcome to pick out the topics you would like to learn more about. The main target group of the course is first-year PhD candidates.
Before you start the course, we advise you to listen to Live Håndlykken Kvale (https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5264-0382), who completed a PhD project in 2022 about knowledge infrastructure for
research data in Norway, to learn what the concept of data stewardship entails.
