7.3 Open/Embargoed/Restricted
In
this video, you'll hear a little about how different kinds of data can be
shared. It goes without saying that not every kind of research data can be
shared openly: personal data, medical information, business secrecy, etc. The
level of sensitivity sets the limit. One way around this is to anonymise the
data. As for sensitive data, you are sometimes able to share some information,
such as the metadata.

Lessons learned
- The level of sensitivity of the data sets the limit for the level of openness.
- Ownership of the data has implications for how and if the data can be shared.
- Even in the cases when the data per se can't be shared, it is possible to archive the metadata.
- Data can be classified according to sensitivity.
Food for thought
Can the data you are working with be shared openly, or are there restrictions? Are there any risks involved? If you are unsure whether or not you can share the data, do you know whom to turn to for more information?
