Managing research data will often lead you into juridical issues that you will need to take into consideration. The question of licensing your research data, and respecting the licenses when reusing the data of others, is one example. And in research, you may need to enter into contracts with external parties, where legal rules govern what a contract should contain. Understanding the legal rules and the legal language may be very important for your data management skills.

Furthermore, research data management may also touch upon cultural heritage and knowledge that warrants ethical norms to be taken into consideration. This section therefore also includes the concept of cultural heritage labels.

Note that section 8.5 is a collection of video lectures on contracts that goes deeper into issues on contracts, beyond the introduction in section 8.4. Those videos should be considered as recommended and not required material for your completion of the course.
